See the ISS tonight: exact times for your address

Right now, seven or so people are living on a million-pound machine the size of a football field, 250 miles up, moving at 17,500 mph. A few evenings every month, it flies over your house bright enough to outshine every star — and most people have never once looked up at the right moment. Fixing that takes two minutes of planning.

Why the ISS is so easy to see

The International Space Station is huge — its solar arrays alone span 240 feet — and covered in reflective surfaces. When sunlight hits it against a dark sky, it reaches magnitude −3 to −4 on a good pass: brighter than Jupiter, rivaling Venus. You don't need a telescope, binoculars, or even particularly dark skies. It's easily visible from a city sidewalk.

The catch is timing. You need three things simultaneously:

  1. The station above your horizon — it's only in view of any point for a few minutes per pass;
  2. Your sky dark — sun at least ~6° below the horizon;
  3. The station still sunlit — at 250 miles up, it catches the sun long after your ground-level sunset.

That triple overlap is why visible passes cluster in the one to three hours after dusk and before dawn — and why prediction matters. The spotting technique

Go out two minutes early. Let your eyes adjust and orient yourself: the prediction says where the pass begins — say, NW. Face that way. Cities are fine, but step away from direct streetlights if you can.

Watch low, then track up. The station rises from the horizon like a slow, brightening star. At first it's dim (you're seeing it at extreme range through thick atmosphere); as it climbs it brightens dramatically. It moves about as fast as a high airliner — noticeably cruising, not shooting-star fast.

Confirm it's the ISS, not a plane:

  • Steady white-gold light — no blinking. Aircraft have flashing strobes and red/green navigation lights.
  • Silent, even after a minute (a plane that bright would be low and loud).
  • Smooth, dead-straight great-circle path across the entire sky.

Know how it will end. On evening passes, the station often doesn't fade at the horizon — it dims and vanishes mid-sky as it crosses into Earth's shadow. Watching a 100-billion-dollar spacecraft get switched off like a lamp is half the show.

Troubleshooting the no-show

If you went out and saw nothing, it's almost always one of four things. Wrong minute: pass times are tight — being five minutes late on a four-minute pass means missing it entirely; use the exact time for your exact address, not your city's in general. Blocked horizon: a 15° pass never climbs above nearby rooftops and trees; save low passes for open ground and prioritize anything above 40°. Shadow entry: on late-evening passes the station may enter Earth's shadow early in the pass — the prediction's duration already accounts for it, but if you started looking mid-pass, it may already be dark. Clouds: even thin high cloud kills a low pass, though a bright overhead pass punches through surprisingly hazy skies.

One more trap: confusing the ISS with a bright planet. Planets don't move (on the scale of minutes). If your "station" has been sitting in the same spot for two minutes, congratulations, you've found Venus.

Make it a ritual

Passes come in streaks — when the geometry is right, you'll get several good evenings in a row. Check the Tonight panel at dinner time; if there's a pass above 40°, it's worth walking outside for. Kids in particular never forget the first time an adult says "a spaceship will fly over the yard at 9:14" and then it does. Wave — the astronauts genuinely can't see you, but everyone waves anyway.

While you're out there, check the same panel for Starlink trains — fresh batches look like a string of pearls sliding across the sky, and they're only visible for a few days after each launch.

What does the ISS look like from the ground?

A bright, steady, star-like point moving smoothly across the sky — no blinking, no color, no sound. It crosses the visible sky in two to six minutes and can outshine everything except the Moon and Venus on a good pass.

Why can I only see the ISS near dusk and dawn?

You're seeing sunlight reflected off the station, so it must be sunlit while your sky is dark. That combination happens in a window an hour or three after sunset and before sunrise. In the middle of the night the station is in Earth's shadow and invisible.

How often does the ISS pass over my house?

The station orbits every ~92 minutes on a track that covers everywhere between 51.6°N and 51.6°S — all of the continental US. Passes over any given spot come in streaks: several evenings in a row, then a gap of days to a couple of weeks before the geometry returns.
